Response:

To:Mr. Boss

I would like to personally thank you for the top notch equipment that you have provided the fish department. You motivate me greatly and I believe that the quality and speed of our production is evident of your values and have raised the bars that you have set for our department.

While our department is performing well, the quality of the workers is not equal. I come in earlier than the rest of the department as well as leave later to compensate for the department’s less qualified workers. Some of the workers are habitually late or fail to perform at the expectations that you set for us. I do my best to take over the work that is deemed too hard or that they do not fulfill to expectations to ensure that our department’s quality and standards are upheld.

I believe it would be in the best interest of the department if I was appointed a higher position along with a raise of ten percent to compensate for the increased responsibility. I will continue to follow the values and expectations that you have appointed for my current position, along with the additional responsibilities that we can negotiate.

Dear Dick,

In this ever-changing world of technology, it is important to stay up with the competition. As a dedicated employee I strive to excel at my job, and I am always trying to improve my performance.  I have been going to school for two years now and at the same time working my full time job.  I would like to continue doing both because I will have a computer science degree in less than a year.

I would like to ask for Tuesdays off so that I can continue to work and finish school.  It will only be temporary and this class is really difficult. It will help my job performance for serving the company in the future.

Today we were talking in class about the High-context and Low-context cultures. The high context culture are more likely to be intuitive and contemplative, such as those in China, Japan, and Arabian countries. They may not take words literally. Based on what I read on chapter one and we talked in class, I think I am more into the low-context side. Low-context cultures tend to be more logical, analytical, and action oriented. In other words, when  there is a problem we go straight to the point. We do not like to waste peoples time or our time. They take words literally.

In-Class Recall 2

For question #3 I thought I had chose the correct answer but I didn’t check my answers like I should have which resulted in me getting the question wrong. Advertisements

In-Class Recall 3

I got question 7 wrong because I rushed and didn’t read question as well as I should have. I skipped over “necessary” prerequisite which I didn’t catch that it was redundant.

My answer regarding the direct reply was incorrect.  In reviewing the chapter, the correct opening is to start directly by responding to the request with a summary statement (i.e. Yes, our store can offer you free shipping on the merchandise you requested).

I also missed the question regarding the most appropriate opening for an adjustment letter granting a claim.  As stated in the book you should grant the request or announce the adjustment immediately (i.e. You should receive your replacement Fitbit not later than October 9th).

I feel both of these mistakes could have been avoided by taking more time to read the details of each question.  I allowed the first few words to determine my answer without considering the full impact of the question.

For question #2, I seem to have misunderstood the question. I think it may have been because we learned the formatting for delivering bad news using the following format: Buffer, reasons, bad news and closing. For question #2, I seem to have misunderstood the question. I think it may have been because we learned the formatting for delivering bad news using the following format: Buffer, reasons, bad news and closing.

I think the format got stuck in my head so following the format I would say that the first thing would be the buffer and not the reasons. Maybe I would’ve got it had it stated”…is usually better received when the reasons are given before the bad news.”

For question #5 I thought Answer C was too wordy and could have been stated in fewer words. I thought Answer B was a better choice as it was less wordy, and to the point which is similar to the answers for the PWC Assignments.

The first day in English class was interesting. I liked how we did the pasta and marshmallow activity to “brake the ice”. To me when you are having a competition to see who is faster and who makes the tallest tower, the activity obligates you to communicate with other people that you just met in the classroom. I may not always like the first day of school, but I did liked that activity.

Dear City Mill,

I am requesting personal time off to attend my eight year old son’s school performance on Saturday, October 7 at Windward Community College’s Ho’olaulea. I understand the department’s need for customer service coverage and Spencer has agreed to cover my shift. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
