A reason people criticize each other is when people show performance only when someone important is around, but when that important somebody is not around they are the worst employee in the room. This can relate to taking credit of someone else’s work to benefit from it and advance in the company. Alterations of words to make it seem like the individual had an important part to the success of the business not only ruins the atmosphere and morale of the work environment but results to more problems and criticism. Individuals that aren’t receiving the credit they should, may become that slackers because they are not being noticed for their handwork, intellect, or impact.

The post 9/11 GI bill was created to provide active duty members with a free college education, including a monthly housing allowance, and a $500 per semester book stipend. With these benefits, also comes many problems, from many levels. Although the bill is here to provide us with financial assistance, sometimes the rules governing the bill starts to become more of a burden rather than a benefit. In many cases, recipients are facing the same or new problems that could have easily been avoided had the rules been changed or improved. Such problems are not only causing a decrease in grades for students, but debt as well! The GI bill requires a few changes regarding the expiration date, administrative discharge eligibility, and overpayment issues because those problems are causing debt/bad credit and extra stress, thus leading to a decrease in academics.

The Student Veterans of America (SVA) held a meeting to discuss improving the GI bill. More than 60 veterans were there! Many proposals for change were suggested, but the two that stood out the most were the 15 year expiration date and administrative discharge eligibility. The current rule regarding the expiration date states that your eligibility expires 15 years after your last period of active duty. Many of us feel as if that should be completely eliminated. If someone puts their life in jeopardy by serving our country for however many years, then why should there be an expiration date to something that will ultimately benefit that person, and in turn, benefit the world. One of the most important things in life is to educate our youth/young adults, that way one day they will become our leaders, inventors, doctors, and teachers. The GI bill can provide that to them, but to put an expiration on its use, only contradicts its purpose.

This is still a rough draft and stuff still needs to be added onto this but here’s what I got so far.

The second point why EFC is not a good indicator for Financial Aid is the Bennett Hypothesis.  The Bennett Hypothesis is according to Gillen “colleges will raise tuition when financial aid is increased, with the implication that increases in financial aid will not improve college affordability.”  Basically, this is saying that the more financial aid is offered the more colleges and universities can increase their tuitions.

        To break down the Bennett Hypothesis even further it can follow these sequences of events.  First, the colleges want to improve, and they can do this by increasing their revenue.  The colleges notice that there is a lot more generosity with the financial aid so there is an opportunity to raise the tuition to capture some of the financial aid in order to raise their revenue.  Some colleges will seize the opportunity but the ones that don’t take advantage of it will give in at some point in order to not fall behind.

To help understand this let’s look at some supply and demand graphs supplied by Gillen:

        Key for the graph:

        Q = Students

        $= Money

        T=Tuition

        Taid= new tuition level

        D=Demand Curve

        Daid = new Demand curve

        G = Financial aid in the form of a grant

        S = Supply

Panel A is the supply and demand graph that is most common when associated with the Bennett Hypothesis.  Panel A assumes a college is held back by capacity meaning that the supply is vertical or inelastic.  Then the government offers grants G to each student.  This raises the demand curve up by G.  The point of intersection with the new demand curve and the supply is Taid.  The change in the supply and demand graph is one for one.  That’s why financial aid doesn’t really help make college more affordable, it’s like you’re still paying the same amount.

Panel B is similar to panel A except that the supply is horizontal (perfectly inelastic).  The tuition does not change but there is an increase in the number of students.  Panel C is where it’s a normal supply and demand graph.  The grants offered by the government still shift the demand to the right.  Thus this leads to an increase in the tuition and number of students.

If you’re not convinced with the original Bennett Hypothesis maybe the second version of the Bennett Hypothesis will be more convincing.  The Bennett Hypothesis 2.0 mainly improves on three points according to Gillen:

  1.      All aid is not created equal
  2.      Selectivity, tuition caps and price discrimination are important
  3.      Don’t ignore the dynamic story

The first point is about how financial aid is distributed.  The low-income students who with financial aid such as the Pell Grant will not allow colleges to raise their tuition.  However, financial aid that is available to everyone can make colleges raise their tuition.  The second point is about tuition caps and price discrimination.  Tuition caps are mainly about public colleges/ universities where their tuition is capped so that they can receive funding from the state.  Most colleges will not cap their tuition to improve their student body.  Price discrimination is mainly used by private colleges.  The private colleges will charge more or less to students depending on the student’s financial background.  The dynamic story is changes over time.  In the case that colleges do increase their revenue they will more likely use it to improve their institution.  Then it becomes something of a domino effect, say college A notices that college B is improving their campus and college A is like “hey we need to improve our school so that we don’t lose students to college B” so college A will increase their tuition or costs in order to keep up with college B.  Then a whole bunch of colleges will follow suit.

I admit I haven’t kept up with my blogs and reading Alyha’s Blog really struck me like the lightning and thunder we had this past weekend. I kindly thank you for the reminder. I agree with what you said, about how you should do your blogs before its too late. I also liked Rose’s Blog. “It’s all a learning process to do better the next time. ” I agree with that 100%. It is a learning process and congratulate you, continuing on to UH Manoa. I liked the last part as well, its on your own and if you don’t care than who will? I’m grateful for all the people I have met here while being at WCC, especially in my classes. Its like some always say Kulia I Ka Nu’u, Strive to reach the highest. If you stick to what you know and continue to grow, you will get there. Even when life hits you with obstacles. The only way to go is up.

Hey class,download

I am blogging a Yahoo! to share that I believe my analogy of not reading too much into the “Essential of Business Communications“chapters and not doing the chapter reviews, writing exercises or activities at the end has dramatically helped to improve my recall practice scores. As a matter of fact, my last three recall practices were all correct so I didn’t have to blog for awhile. As I said previously, tests, quizzes, and exams all make me hyperventilate so guess its time to exhale.

I have learned a lot of new information from our group project on Pell Grants.  We are a group of 4 and my contributions are researching on proposed cuts Past and Present, distribution of funding and any other duties to make our project beneficial to our readers.  In the past, I have worked in groups and  found every time is an opportunity for me to grow and learn from others, whether my experiences are negative or positive.  It’s all a learning process to do better the next time I’m in a group.  Personally, I have found working in groups can be difficult at times.  But being here at WCC it’s one of the benefits I will take with me as I move on to UH Manoa.  But I have heard from others already at UH that you’re pretty much on your on and if you don’t care, then who will?

Between spending hundreds of dollars in textbooks each semester and scrapping enough money together for rent and groceries, college is a financial burden.  Between house, utility, car and the other payments necessary maintain a home, my family doesn’t have thousands of dollars to spare annually. Multiplied by four years, it’s an intimidating number to face. That is why my group is doing research on the whole Federal student loan process.

For many students whose parents annual income is too high to qualify for federal financial aid, but too low to personally finance one or more college educations, the price has become an all too common fear. These students and their families must often resort to borrowing a cocktail of loans in order to finance an education at a four-year institution.
