Today we were talking in class about the High-context and Low-context cultures. The high context culture are more likely to be intuitive and contemplative, such as those in China, Japan, and Arabian countries. They may not take words literally. Based on what I read on chapter one and we talked in class, I think I am more into the low-context side. Low-context cultures tend to be more logical, analytical, and action oriented. In other words, when  there is a problem we go straight to the point. We do not like to waste peoples time or our time. They take words literally.

The first day in English class was interesting. I liked how we did the pasta and marshmallow activity to “brake the ice”. To me when you are having a competition to see who is faster and who makes the tallest tower, the activity obligates you to communicate with other people that you just met in the classroom. I may not always like the first day of school, but I did liked that activity.

Comment from the first week:

I know, me to Wanda! I had I little bit of a hard time trying to figure out how to post a blog. Even though the books where different editions, both are really informative and good to help us do the homework.

  • Hi guys, today I want to talk about the feeling of having a blog for the very first time. The idea of having a blog was a little strange to me, because before when I thought about blogs I used to think that it was a site where people used blogs to bully others or hacked them. Having a blog has changed my opinion about blogging. Now I think about it as a way of communication, a way to interact with my class mates. I think its really cool how we can comment on each others blogs, and share our opinions and thoughts about the class discussions or homework.

First blog post

This is the excerpt for your very first post.

Hi guys, just like Wanda I notice that the books are different editions, but even though the edition was different the first chapter of the 8e was really helpful for the homework. We learned the differences between high-context and low-context. High-context is when some people are intuitive, contemplated, they take longer to make decisions. People communicate with facial expressions, posture, gestures and voice inflections. Low-context people are more assertive, they are logical, analytical and action oriented (they get down to business).
