Ch.7 Negative Messages

Chapter 7 was about negative messages and how to deliver the negative message as softly as possible.  There were many ways to say a negative message such as using the passive voice, implied refusal, using a subordinate clause etc.  However, they don’t mention too much about being blunt about it.  They only bring this up … Continue reading Ch.7 Negative Messages →

Chapter 7 was about negative messages and how to deliver the negative message as softly as possible.  There were many ways to say a negative message such as using the passive voice, implied refusal, using a subordinate clause etc.  However, they don’t mention too much about being blunt about it.  They only bring this up when the bad news is minuscule.

After going through the lecture on Wednesday the first thought that came to mind was the “you can’t handle the truth!” line or meme or whatever people call it.  After going through the writing exercise, I thought this was one of the harder ones.  Like damn, this is a lot of work to tell someone “no”.  I get why we have to beat around the bushes to tell someone no but honestly I’d be fine if they were just blunt about it with me.  If they were just like “You’re fired!” and give me a valid reason I’d be fine with it.  It’d suck but shit happens man and it can’t be helped.  Just beating around the bushes sounds like extra work for the person who has to send the bad news.  Maybe that’s just me though.

Figured I’d post a link to the “you can’t handle the truth” line if people don’t know about it.

What to expect from PWC 7 and 8

For these team assignments I am willing to do whatever amount of work it takes to get a good grade so an A or a high B.  I’ll also try to keep my teammates satisfied or won’t do anything that they don’t approve of. I expect that I’ll do a decent amount of work but … Continue reading What to expect from PWC 7 and 8 →

I expect that I’ll do a decent amount of work but I do not think that I’ll wind up doing the whole assignment.  In the end I think everything is going to turn out alright.  My goal is to get an A or a high B or so while trying to stay on good terms with my teammates.

Professionally Written Compositions (PWC)

After having finished four of ten of these I will say that they are pretty challenging they are not all free 35 points.  I would say that the closest one that is a free 35 points was the Linkedin PWC.  You just have to get your profile to all-star for 35 points and share it … Continue reading Professionally Written Compositions (PWC) →

After having finished four of ten of these I will say that they are pretty challenging they are not all free 35 points.  I would say that the closest one that is a free 35 points was the Linkedin PWC.  You just have to get your profile to all-star for 35 points and share it with Lance.  Not to say that it was a free 35 points it was just the easiest of the 4 we got so far.  The toughest one I would say was the first because that seemed like the most analytical one.  The most bizarre one to me was the yelp review mainly because it had to be 500 words or more.  I feel that to make it 500 words easily you have to feel really strongly about something in a good or bad way.  In other words it was your best time or your worst time at a place.  The second PWC would have been a lot easier for me but I guess I am not as involved as I should be.

In-class Recall Practice 3

Dang this one was probably the hardest one, I got a 5/7 which is my lowest scoring recall practice.  When I look back at it in hindsight the questions I got wrong, the answers were kind of obvious.  One of the questions I got wrong was question 2 and in this case it came down … Continue reading In-class Recall Practice 3 →

Dang this one was probably the hardest one, I got a 5/7 which is my lowest scoring recall practice.  When I look back at it in hindsight the questions I got wrong, the answers were kind of obvious.  One of the questions I got wrong was question 2 and in this case it came down to either a or b.  A was consider  composing important messages offline and B was Use general tags such as Hi! or Important as the subject line to catch the reader’s attention.  I was split between these two but A does make more sense than B after looking at the answer because you do not have to have a tag such as Hi! in the subject line.  Overall, I am not too concerned I think I will be alright

TLDR: Worst scoring recall practice, the answers made sense in hindsight and I am not too concerned about this recall practice.

Thoughts about Week 4

Dang, about a quarter of this semester already went by.  This week the most important assignments this week were the research exercise parts one and two, and the recall practice. Dang, about a quarter of this semester already went by.  This week the most important assignments this week were the research exercise parts one and two, and the recall practice.

This week we got one of the assignments that were worth more than the usual 5 point assignment or so, in fact it was worth a whooping 30 points.  For this assignment seeing that it was worth a lot I decided to get a substantial head start on it.  I had it finished on Sunday.  Come Monday after spending most of the time Lance gave us for it in class we got the first part finished.  Then I finished up the reflection or the part 2 that night.  Overall, it was not too difficult and with this experience it’ll make the next one even easier if there is another one that is similar to this.

Recall practice 2 was on Wednesday and I was not aware of this so I thought I was not going to do well but I did pretty well.  I got a 6/7 but I could have gotten a 7/7 but I changed the answer to the first question at the last second when it was right FeelsBadMan.  I usually do not read the chapters because I don’t like reading, I am lazy and what he covers in class is fairly good but I am alright with what I got.

Sorry this is so long but this is the last paragraph 🙂  So on Wednesday Lance gave us our 2 big assignments worth 35 points each I believe.  This weekend I’ll try do it up and make it well enough to get an A maybe and it does seem like the most difficult assignment Lance gave us this semester.  Hopefully I do not have to make a separate post for the recall practice because they’d be too much work.  I’ll see you guys on Monday.

Week 3

This week we only had one class because of Labor Day and in this class we went over chapter 4.  Chapter 4 was about revising business messages, nothing too exciting.  One of the topics covered was what to watch in proofreading.  Also how to make a message visually appealing such as using bullets to make … Continue reading Week 3 →

This week we only had one class because of Labor Day and in this class we went over chapter 4.  Chapter 4 was about revising business messages, nothing too exciting.  One of the topics covered was what to watch in proofreading.  Also how to make a message visually appealing such as using bullets to make points so that it looks easier to read.

It also looks like things are picking up in class there are some 30+ point assignments coming up so let’s hope for the best and I’ll post again in another week or so.

Chapters 2-3

In the second week of class we went over certain writing techniques such as the audience benefits, the “you” view and parallelism.  I think that these writing skills would be very important in business writing because we’d like to be very persuasive.  Someone could be very persuasive when they try to make it sound like … Continue reading Chapters 2-3 →

In the second week of class we went over certain writing techniques such as the audience benefits, the “you” view and parallelism.  I think that these writing skills would be very important in business writing because we’d like to be very persuasive.  Someone could be very persuasive when they try to make it sound like they have your interest in their writing.  Sounding positive is another good way to persuade people because there is no way you can persuade anyone without any optimism.  For example, one could talk about all the negatives but that probably would not convince anyone, however, if you contrast it with something positive you could leave an impact on someone.  Overall, these chapters and the activities that we did for them was very helpful but I can’t help but feel like this was some common sense stuff or something we learn in ENG 100.

First Week of Class Impressions

Before class started on the first day I did not know what to expect I thought this class would be time consuming and strict based off the old syllabuses that I saw on Windward’s website.  Once I got into class the vibes were pretty chill not like the strict tone I was expecting.  Then the marshmallow tower challenge it was the classic me where I do not participate in groups much at all.  Then in the second day we also went into groups again but this time I participated a little more.  Overall, I think this class is going to be alright a lot more group work than I thought there would be and there is a lot more writing in this class as well in comparison to English 100.
